<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 4.0 Draft//EN"> The October Meeting Meeting picts. By Alberto More here!   October Meeting Information Date: 10 October, 1998 Meeting Place:HSBC Securities 10F Meeting Time: 12:30 Talk: IPv6 Demos: VNC, Corel NetWinder Auction: Many, many items Nijikai Place: Tengu Tokyo EkiMae, Thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting Linux at the October 10th meeting! We had a good turnout to help set up starting at 10:00, and over 50 people came to the meeting overall. The nijikai was another success as well - it was fun to see PC's and monitors from the auction lining the walls of Tengu :-) Thanks to Shigeo Honda for this slide show of the meeting, Ken Harada for these snapshots, and thanks again to our speakers: IPv6 at IMASY by Ichiro Fukuhara and Hajimu Umemoto An in-depth look at how IPv6 testing is progressing at leading Japanese organizations in co-ordination with IMASY. Although most of their work is being done with FreeBSD, they are working towards including more Linux interfacing. One thing this talk really showed was that there is a lot of commonality between the FreeBSD group and Linux groups, and a lot of opportunity to work together. The development of the IPv6 protocol and its experiments are joint and global effort, where Open Software community play a great role. IMASY has been working with WIDE - 6 bone project to the actual experimentation of IPv6 through V6-V4-V6 tunneling. IMASY plans to the first Japanese ISP who OFFICIALLY supports IPv6 protocol for dialup subscribers. <P> IMASY, Internet Mutual Aid Society is a Yokohama based regional, non-profit Internet Service Provider and network users community. <A HREF="http://www.imasy.or.jp"> (http://www.imasy.or.jp)</A>. All the technical support and operations are performed though the enthusiasts' efforts. <P> <B>Ichiro Fukuhara</B> is the Chief Engineer of IMASY and responsible for the system design, hardware and software selection, and day to day operations. <P> <B>Hajimu Umemoto</B> is an Engineer of IMASY who is in charge of the same roles. <P> Corel Netwinder Computer by Jim Tittsler This is one tight package! A 275MHz screamer built into the size of a small router, the Corel Netwinder is a neat system to play with, and could offer commercial customers a solution for small spaces. He used MagicPoint http://www.mew.org/mgp/ to show an outline. He has also left a copy of the presentation (without the audio clip :-) at: ftp://starship.skyport.net/pub/crew/jtittsler/tlug-netwinder.tgz The netwinder.mgp file is plain text if you just want to look through the outline. More complete sources of information are: http://www.corelcomputer.com/ http://www.netwinder.org/ VNC by Urs Roesch VNC lets you have an Xwindow of one computer running Linux, MS, or Solaris on another box. This is a really good way of having MS apps ready to use on your Linux box without having to switch monitors. More information is available at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/ Tlug CDROM's: Rex Walters has volunteered to co-ordinate the Tlug CDROM circle to produce CD's for the group. If you are interested in helping out by burning CD's or collecting useful programs, please get in contact with Rex (rex@auspex.co.jp). At present, we have: 01: Netscape 4.05, 4.06, 4.07 02: Mozilla source, Netscape 4.5b1, 4.5b2 03: Tlug Archives, VNC, Xcdroast, Alien, Monash, ..... 04: Updates 1: Caldera, Debian, Slackware, Suse, Turbolinux 05: Updates 2: RedHat 5.0, 5.1 #03 was especially popular, and sold out of it's first run at the meeting. Auction: This month's auction proved to be the most successful yet! The totals aren't in yet, but it looks like the proceeds will be the highest so far. Thanks to Jim Tittsler for being our auctioneer! Elections: We had two volunteers to join the Tlug executive as technical directors, Rex Walters and Kenichi Itsumi, who were elected by acclamation. Thanks for volunteering! -Joe Marchak. Finance information can be found in the accounting section of the TLUG home page. 📷 Meeting photos would appear here ...

B1/B2, Chuo-ku, Tokyo Phone: 03-3275-3691 The Friday Nomikai at Tengu was another success, and 24 people came out to eat, drink, and talk linux :-) We had a "mini-auction" of DRAM donated by Urs Roesch, and some network cards as well. That plus a donation from Hikaru and the change from the Nomikai gives us over 16,000 yen to go towards the Tlug library and other good tlug events. Also, thanks to Cliff Miller and Scott Stone of PHT for donating copies of Applixware-J and Turbolinux 2.0E, and to Marcus Metzler for donating 4 O'Reilly books plus over 30 movies to the library. The Voyager and Deep Space Nine CD's were especially popular. Now that we have some funds to put into materials, please contact Jonathan Byrne or talk to him at the next meeting about what software or books you would like to see in the library. Thanks again to everyone who came out and helped celebrate! -Joe Marchak Finance information can be found in the accounting section of the TLUG home page. 📷 Meeting photos would appear here ...

The CDRom burner is now available to anyone for use in providing the group with software distributions ... CD to burn? call Jonathan Byrne :-) Special thanks to Gaspar Sinai for the loan of his Dec Alpha, Takeshi Hakamada for bringing the SGI Indy, Chris Sekiya for the Amiga 3000 and Tim Meggs for bringing the Mac "boilermaker". Thanks also to Shigeo Honda for again organizing the food and beverages, and Jonathan Byrne for organizing the library. Best surprise of the meeting: Jonathan's 5000 yen Sparc 2, labeled as defective at the store, booted as soon as memory was added! In addition there were free-take-as-many-as-you-can-carry 10baseT ethernet cables, power cables, UK power cables(!!), brass screws(!?!?) and other odds and ends at the door for all. The Tengu nijikai was a gathering of minds, mostly in a foggy state, and was a lot of fun. What was in those shooters, Tim? :-) Japanese notes are available at http://tlug.jp/9808/index-j.html Finance information can be found in the accounting section of the TLUG home page.

TLUG May 1998 Meeting

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"> The May Nomikai 📷 Meeting photos would appear here We got into a deep philosophical discussion around 3:00 a.m. This was partly due to us finding Ken Schwarz's liquor cabinet and making friends with a bottle of malt whiskey. I stumbled out of the party at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Wow, intense fun, good friends, and excellent conversation. An awesome TLUG event.

April Technical Meeting

The April 11th meeting brought together over 65 Linux enthusiasts in Tokyo, including Tague Griffith of Netscape Communication’s I18N division and Cliff Miller, President of Pacific HiTech. We first met at 12:30 at the Yaesu Chuo ticket gate and then went to HSBC for Domino’s pizza. The total pizza bill was divided up among all those that ate. Joe Marchak, Ken Harada, and Craig Oda, (three of the infamous gang of five TLUG officers) hopped up and down in front of the meeting room to kick off this grand event. Ken gave an amazingly good simultaneous translation session. The bilingual meeting was an enormous success. Joe Marchak made an announcement that HSBC, and therefore the June TLUG meeting, is moving to a new building on the same street. The big things people were there for were Pizza, Linux, and Linux-Netscape. Shigeo Honda led a genki task-force to collate and order the proper number of pizzas. This came out to 1,000 yen per person. Shigeo volunteered to be the TLUG Snackmaster for the next meeting. We’re discussing ways to integrate this position into the core TLUG direction setting team. ...

TLUG January 1998 Nomikai

Notes on the TLUG January 14 Nomikai C. Oda January 16, 1998 1. Bigger and Better I was running late to the January 14th nomikai. I thought we were gathering at 19:30 at Tokyo station and the correct time was 19:15. Everyone gathered 15 minutes before I got there and left. Of course, when Stephen Turnbull and Rob Bickel asked me what time the meeting was, I said 19:30 at Tokyo station. We moved from Yaesu bookstore to Tokyo station just in time to meet Yohko Kase and Ayako Kato . While this was a pleasant experience for the three men, the two ladies were saying, “where is all the membership?” Where was everyone? We went up to Tengu, hoping that we would bump into a few members, and were surprised when we met about 20 loud TLUGers drinking beer and already chowing down on food. Daniel Kenny, the organizer of this successful event was running around trying to make sure everyone had a chair and a beer. ...

Thoughts about the next Meeting

from 1 Saturday, December 13, 1997 Special thanks to Masaori 'Smiley' Omote For This Video! The December, 1997 meeting of the Tokyo Linux Users Group (TLUG) was a raging success, and thanks are due again to HSBC, and to Joe Marchak in particular, for their continued generosity in allowing TLUG to use their facilities. There were about 27 people at the meeting, including three women, and 8 Japanese. Also of interest were Karl-Max from Germany (who lives in Germany) and Nick from the Ukraine (who may live in Japan now). ...
