It has been designed to run under the Linux operating system, but works fine under most *NIX variants as well. The monitoring daemon runs intermittent checks on hosts and services you specify using external "plugins" which return status information to Nagios. When problems are encountered, the daemon can send notifications out to administrative contacts in a variety of different ways (email, instant message, SMS, etc.). Below are a few applicatoions Linux users may want to check out. Fluxbox - a new window manager based on BlackBox code. Multignome project - An enhanced version of gnome terminal which lets you switch between tabbed termnal windows. Ethereal - A graphical network analyzer with many filtering features. An essential tool for solving network problems! Presentations 1. "Linux Terminal Server and Diskless Clients" by Mauro Sauco 2. "Kickstart - Automating Linux Installs" by Alberto Tomita (I'll make the slides available as soon as I work out how :) ) Auction TLUG is a non-profit, self-supported organization. In order to cover occasional expenses, we hold auctions to raise funds. The proceeds are saved in the TLUG account and is used for server hardware maintenance, domain name registration, to rent a meeting space when a free venue isn't available, etc. As usual, May 2002 TLUG auction was a huge success. Many thanks to Jim Tittsler for running the auction, as well as people who brought in items and people who bid for them. The stuffed penguins are always very popular. Here is the summary. Leading Edge offers IT consulting and IT professional placement services. Roxen Web Server and Pike Martin Baehr described and demonstrated the Roxen web server, and described Pike, its interpreted implementation language. He also mentioned the Caudium project which is a fork of the project dedicated to maintaining backwards compatibility with earlier versions of Roxen. Links Auction Among the items auctioned off this month was Hikari, the machine which has been the TLUG server over the past few years. Thanks to Jonathan Byrne for running the auction. XEmacs Release Management The Cathedral Brothel and the Bazaar Bathhouse Stephen J. Turnbull of the University of Tsukuba and XEmacs.ORG discussed the process that resulted in the release of XEmacs 21.4. He went on to offer a few early thoughts on how it might be possible to create a large-project open source development environment that is both fun and productive, without a benevolent despot.
