Thoughts about the next Meeting

from 1 Saturday, December 13, 1997 Special thanks to Masaori 'Smiley' Omote For This Video! The December, 1997 meeting of the Tokyo Linux Users Group (TLUG) was a raging success, and thanks are due again to HSBC, and to Joe Marchak in particular, for their continued generosity in allowing TLUG to use their facilities. There were about 27 people at the meeting, including three women, and 8 Japanese. Also of interest were Karl-Max from Germany (who lives in Germany) and Nick from the Ukraine (who may live in Japan now). ...

TLUG T-shirt Design Contest

from 1 By C. Oda November 14, 1997 Raging Success in the Hot Tokyo Night Thanks to the hard work of Demian Martos, the November 13 weekday meeting was a hot success. Wild TLUG members almost set the Tengu izakaya on fire when the napkins got too close to the sukiyaka burner and erupted in flames. Rob Bickel rushed to the rescue and extinguished the fire before we damaged the drinking establishment. We paid respects to 8-10 pitchers of beer and numerous plates of yakitori, beef, eggplant, rice, niku jyaga, chicken karaage, spinach salad, beef salad, and other fine dishes. A night of fun was enjoyed for a reasonable 1,800 yen per person plus a 200 yen donation to TLUG. ...

Summary of Meeting

from 1 Saturday, August 2, 1997 Summary of Meeting Although there was a strong showing of the Tokyo Linux Users Group and many of the members went home with lottery prizes, quite a few of the members could not make the trip into Tokyo. The August meeting was held close to Tokyo station at Joe Marchak's office (HSBC). Three machines were demonstrated: Sparc hardware, Pentium Pro 266 mhz, and Pentium. Following the meeting there was an excursion to Akihabara where John Little led a tour of the electric city's best bargains for used Sparc hardware. It was hot and muggy as we snaked through narrow corridors that forced us to walk single file. The stairs were high and looked shaky. The floors were grimy. The hardware was all that mattered and there were some gems among the battered cases blackened with dust. We were all mulling over a Sparc 10 with 32 megs RAM, 19 inch color monitor, and 500 meg SCSI disk that was selling for 170,000 yen. ...

TLUG June 1997 Meeting

from 1 Saturday, June 14 1997 The June 14th meeting was another success. It started off at Tokyo station where we dined on Okonomiyaki. Most peopled went for the mixed-yaki, Craig went for the gusto and ordered the oomori portion. John Little brought a camera and took a few pictures. We were all amazed at Joe Marchak's 20" color monitor on a Linux machine running Red Hat with Motif. Thank you Joe and HSBC for hosting the meeting. ...

The Meeting at Data Stream K.K.

Craig Oda August 11, 1996 1, 2, 3 Pre-Lunch Jim Tittsler waited at under the Big Box sign at Takadanobaba station as Joe Marcha rumbled by on his big 750 motorbike. The pre-lunch talk focused on IP masquerading and how to connect a Linux box to an Internet Service Provider and use an unused IP range to provide service for your entire line off of a single account. Jim and I speculated on how people could run an entire network off of a single 3,000 yen/month account. Jim is currently using wireless broadcasts bounced off a satellite to provide two-way communication to a BBS in his house running on a Linux box. ...
